I had the distinct pleasure of watching my beautiful and talented college friend, Kristy Johnson, light up the stage tonight at the Pasadena Playhouse. She was terrific! I have loved this play since I first read it years ago, although (as my writer friend points out) the “plot twist” is not so much a twist as expected the entire time. Sure, you pretty much know what’s going to happen from the start. But the characters are multi-dimensional and we can easily identify a piece of our own pathology in each thwarted romance. The acting was superb in general. In addition to Kristy, the performance of Adam J. Smith (as Mr. Marks, the Jewish fabric merchant who longs for the Black seamstress) was also a stand out for me. The show runs through December 2 at the Pasadena Playhouse. If you’re in town, don’t miss it.
